Government-funded research for discovering semantic meaning

IBM York Lab is embedded in the University of York campus. That enables a powerful combination of industry expertise from a worldwide business leader with research insights from a world-class academic institution.

Software developers, academics, and postgraduates work closely on skills sharing, fresh research, and product development. As an environment for research and innovation to flourish, it's a marriage made in heaven. Or in Yorkshire, which we'd say is pretty much the same thing.

We've started a new Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) this year worth quarter of a million pounds, sponsored by the UK Government’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

Our three-year project explores tools and techniques using machine learning and model transformation techniques that automatically discover the semantic meaning of a spreadsheet's contents with online analytical processing (OLAP).

Come and see the results to date as we share our working prototype at a conference for the very first time. Talk to the research team and the KTP associates about anything: the outcomes so far, how we secured the funding, working as a KTP, and what's coming next.
