Mad Science

Make a difference in the maker space

Meet a bot and greet its maker at the Festival this year. Our Maker Space is a place where Hursley developers explore exciting new technologies, and they want to share their work with you.

We've had an instrumented fussball table, internet-connected t-shirts, an opinion feedback station, and puzzle boxes for escape zones that we run at community events. Creating these innovations is collaborative and fun, and people get to take on their passion projects. This year our exhibits will include a miniature 3D model of Hursley House plus a full-size 3D-printed R2-D2 droid from Star Wars.

Meet our makers, talk to them about their enthusiasms, and try out their latest fun gadgets. We'll also have examples from the startups and entrepreneurs who collaborated with IBM at the Barclays Eagle Labs. In previous years those have included a fashion shopping chatbot, a motivational fridge, and the enchanted doorknob, using a combination of IBM Cloud, Node-RED, IBM Watson APIs, and partner hardware technologies.

Maker Space is IBM Hursley's crowdsourced innovation venue, where our developers collaborate on cool combinations of hardware and IBM software, robotics, and 3D printing. And we take the results on the road to dev conferences as "Mad Science" exhibits.

Any IBMer can use the Maker Space to learn new skills, share knowledge with colleagues, embrace new trends in open source hardware, and develop their maker skills. We start with basic electronics, and build skills to develop advanced projects. Those can be personal projects, external demos, or just to develop and hone new skills alongside the day job. We also run HelloSensor, a free Internet of Things (IoT) bootcamp for IBM people taught by IBM people.

We document our projects at IBM Code developer.ibm.com so that any developer can build and remix projects. And now DesignSpark Marketplace is available at designmarketplace.com created in association with RS Components as a maker-to-maker environment for buying and selling innovative ideas.
